Florida has high humidity with wet conditions for much of the year. As such, mold growth is a common problem affecting both residential and commercial buildings. Mold growth is also caused by water intrusion from plumbing fixtures, indoor A/C units, leaky roofs, gutters, water heaters, and so on. Mold often grows in areas that are not readily visible, such as behind walls, underneath floors, and crawlspaces.
Some people have sensitivities to mold and can experience sympoms of mold exposure like respiratory issues, headaches, nausea, and flu or cold-like symptoms. Infants, elderly, asthmatics, and people with suppressed immune systems or lung desease are particularly at risk and may experience more severe symptoms. Research in this area is ongoing, so all mold growth should be treated as a potential hazard for your family.
Indoor air sampling is a great way to check for unusual levels of mold or other hazards in the home. If you know of or suspect water damage, if the air in some areas has a musty odor, or there are dark splotches on the walls or ceilings, then air sampling can tell you whether or not you may be inhaling any hazardous mold spores.
WHI Home Inspections has no affiliation with any companies that provide mold remediation. As such, our assessment is an entirely unbiased evaluation of the property. We conduct a visual inspection of the entire property to locate mold growth and assess the source of the moisture using thermal imaging tools and a moisture meter.
